The Hudson Penthouse

Expertly renovated to capture the breathtaking view

the problem to solve

What do you do when you’ve got a bland standard condo with a great deal of potential and an unstoppable vision? You turn it into a penthouse! This three story penthouse dated condo in the heart of Vancouver needed a design overhaul to echo the luxurious potential that it had. The homeowner also wanted to replace the baseboard heaters throughout the suite and add in forced air heat and air conditioning. Mechanical updates would include upgrading the home to a smart home (wiring the rooms to create an automation system), adding a heat pump in the roof for the new high-velocity heating/cooling system, and updating the sprinkler and fire system.

the story of the build

The Upward team performed major structural and engineering changes to this penthouse renovation. The cement staircase was removed with oversight from the original building engineer and replaced with an open riser cantilevered stairwell encased in glass. Interior walls were upgraded to glass where possible in order to increase the light between rooms and to give a more open feel. The new heating and cooling system required coring through the cement slab from the roof to the suite, this allowed us to add in the new high-velocity heating and cooling system that replaced the baseboard electric heat. The key to the project success (beyond the technical engineering expertise) was the communication with the building manager and concierge throughout the project. Navigating the strata rules for construction in the building and understanding how the building mechanical systems worked allowed the project to avoid potential downtime and costly errors during the demolition and build stages.
